While some students tuned in to see who was wearing what many were determined to stay up until the last award was given, best picture. This year’s winner was “Slumdog Millionaire.” The film follows a Mumbai teenager as he competes on India’s version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” and is arrested under suspicion of cheating; while he is being interrogated events from his own life reveal why he knows the answers.

Winning eight of its ten Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, “Slumdog Millionaire” took India to new heights.

The day after the awards an informal survey of approximately 100 students, faculty and staff from Elon University found that 56 individuals tuned in to the 81st annual Academy Awards, 61 percent of people surveyed knew who had won best picture and 44 percent of people had seen the film.

The Elon community was split on why they thought “Slumdog” took home best picture.

“I thought it was the best movie nominated,” said junior Hunter Gros. “But, I am also a firm believer that the Oscars are extremely political and they wanted to award this movie for its diversity and new style of film making.”

While other students believed “Slumdog” took home the gold because of its creative story and plotline.

“I thought the movie had a great plot and was definitely my pick for best picture,” said sophomore Jordan McDonough.

No matter why they thought it was number one, faculty, staff and students agreed “Slumdog Millionaire” was a shoe in for best picture.
